The New Year 2010 has just started and this is a good time
to review car insurance changes which have been implemented in 2009 and which
will help us in getting a low car insurance rates.
As of October 2009 seven states-California, Connecticut, New
Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah and Washington State-plus the District of
Columbia, have banned the use of hand-held cell phones while driving. In Utah
and Washington State this law does not fall under "primary
enforcement" which would mean that in these states the motorist is not
ticketed for using a hand-held cell phone.
As of October 2009 text messaging on cell phone is banned in
18 states and the District of Columbia. Utah law is one of the toughest where a
person convicted of causing injury or fatal accident if the driver was
multitasking and using a cell phone for text messaging can be put behind the
bars. This strict enforcement would stop distracted driving which is one of the
main causes of accidents. These changes would greatly reduce the risk of auto
accidents and also help in ensuring that the consumers get a low auto insurance
rate since the auto insurance expense is reduced at the insurers end.
Presently, many of the drivers in USA are driving cars
without auto insurance coverage and as per the information 14% of the drivers
are uninsured. At times like this, if you want to keep low auto insurance rates
than you should review car insurance coverage. It would be advisable to take
the uninsured auto insurance coverage or the under insured driver coverage. If
you have this coverage, which will not cost you much, you can claim for any
medical expense of car damage if the uninsured driver is solely responsible or
at fault. Thus the auto insurance claims would not be counted and you will
still be eligible for a low car insurance rate, even though you have received a
claim.
There has been a top safety award, "top safety
pick" given to 19 passenger cars and eight sport utility vehicles for the
2010 model year by the Virginia-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
These cars would protect you and the passengers in case of any accident.
Insurance companies will certainly be giving the consumers a low car insurance
rate for these cars.
Efforts are being made jointly by the State insurance
department and also by the insurance companies to reduce the auto insurance
frauds. Auto insurance frauds have been another reason for the high rise in the
costs to the insurance companies. Once these can be reduced you can get a low
car insurance premium since the insurance companies base their rates on the
cost that they incur.
As we move on to the New Year 2010, we can look forward to
further changes and with each change it would always be advisable to review car
insurance coverage for your own policy to see if you can still get low car
insurance rates. It will be a pleasure to keep you informed.
